A domain name will not decide your SEO performance on its own — but a badly chosen one becomes a burden you cannot fix for years. Conflating those two is a common mistake. The expectation that "putting a keyword in the domain will lift my rankings" no longer holds. What does hold: a long, confusing, wrongly-suffixed or unbrandable address permanently depresses your click-through rate, your memorability and the trust you project. This guide covers what a domain actually does for SEO, what changed in Turkey's .tr ecosystem, and the checks worth running before you buy.
Short answer: indirectly yes, directly very little. The long answer splits into three points.
Keywords in the domain no longer give an edge. There was a period when the exact match domain tactic worked; an address like cheaphosting.com could surface for "cheap hosting" on the strength of its name alone. That loophole closed years ago. Today a keyword in the domain buys you nothing if the content behind it is weak.
A country extension gives a small edge in local search. Because Google promotes content local to the user, country-code domains (.tr, .de, .kr) hold a slight advantage in their home market. But as Google's own comments make clear, that advantage is "not too much" — and the language of the content matters more than the extension. A .com site publishing in Turkish can rank perfectly well in Turkey.
New extensions carry no inherent advantage. Suffixes like .shop, .online or .tech are neither better nor worse than .com in a search engine's eyes. The difference shows up in user perception — which is the part that actually matters.
This is the most strategic decision in choosing a domain.
Generic domains (something like gameservers.com) tell people what you sell at first glance. But they make branding harder, they are less memorable, they blur into dozens of competitors using the same word, and they constrain you when the business widens.
Brand domains — a coined or abstract word — say nothing at first. But they can be owned, protected legally, and they accumulate meaning over time. Nearly every large player in this sector took that route.
Practical advice: choose a brandable name and leave the job of explaining what you sell to page titles, meta descriptions and content. The small "descriptive" advantage you think you are giving up in the domain has no SEO value anyway.
Still the most trusted extension by perception. Users default to typing .com when recalling an address. The natural pick if you have international ambitions. The drawback: most good names are taken.
A strong option if your market is Turkey. It carries a small advantage in local results and reads as "local and established" to Turkish users. After the rule change described below, registering one has become far easier than it used to be.
They are not disadvantaged in search. But they do not inspire the same confidence as .com, and people recalling your address may reflexively type .com and land on a competitor. That is why, absent budget or naming constraints, they should not be the first choice.
A practical strategy: make .com or .com.tr your primary address, then register the close spellings and the important alternate extensions and redirect them to it. That is both brand protection and insurance against typos.
Since 14 September 2022, .tr domains in Turkey have been administered through TRABİS, the system run under the BTK. The most consequential outcome of that transition was the removal of the documentation requirement for commercial extensions.
Registering .com.tr previously meant submitting a trade registry certificate or trademark registration that had to match the domain exactly. That obligation is gone.
.com.tr, .net.tr, .org.tr, .gen.tr, .biz.tr, .info.tr, .web.tr, .tv.tr, .name.tr, .tel.tr.av.tr — bar association membership (lawyers).dr.tr — medical diploma (physicians).edu.tr, .k12.tr, .gov.tr, .bel.tr, .pol.tr, .tsk.tr — proof of institutional status.kep.tr — registered electronic mail providersFor document-free extensions, allocation goes to whoever applies first and completes instantly. Which also means the .com.tr address you have in mind can be taken by someone else — register the one you want without waiting.
Domains can technically contain Turkish characters (ş, ğ, ı, ö, ç, ü); the system converts them behind the scenes into a code beginning with xn--. In practice this causes friction: some users do not have a Turkish keyboard, some mail and chat applications fail to linkify these addresses properly, and copied addresses can appear as an unreadable string.
Recommendation: avoid non-ASCII characters. Register the accented variant separately and redirect it to the main address.
The same logic applies to hyphens: an address like game-servers.com is fine for a search engine but not for a human. Anyone who forgets to say "hyphen" out loud sends someone to the wrong place.
A domain is your brand's most critical digital asset, and the hardest one to recover once lost.

Not meaningfully. The exact match domain tactic lost its effect years ago. Rather than squeezing a keyword into the domain, use it naturally in page titles and content.
If your audience is only in Turkey, .com.tr gives local perception and a slight ranking edge. If you may expand abroad, .com is more flexible. Budget permitting, take both and redirect one to the other.
No. With the TRABİS transition, the documentation requirement was lifted for commercial extensions including .com.tr, and allocation now goes to the first applicant. Extensions like .av.tr, .dr.tr and .edu.tr still require documents.
Technically yes, but we advise against it. Users without a Turkish keyboard cannot type it and some applications fail to recognise the link. Make the ASCII version primary and redirect the other.
For a serious project, at least two to three years; a longer registration reduces renewal risk and signals stability. Either way, keep auto-renewal on.
Check the registration date and status in WHOIS first; if it expires soon you can watch it. If the site is dormant, an offer to the owner is possible. Otherwise consider a different extension or name variant — but avoid hyphenated, forced alternatives.
.tr extensions including .com.tr need no documents; first applicant wins.
